I joined On Deck as employee #6, helping grow it to 200+ employees and almost $1B in value.

On Deck (aka “Stanford for startup founders”) is a super operations-heavy company. But our open secret was that we hired lots of remote operators. When I left, most of the work at On Deck was done by remote operators (or automated).

I’ve thought a lot about hiring great remote operators. The reason for this goes all the way back to my childhood: my mother emigrated to Canada from the Philippines, in time becoming the first Filipina professor in Canada. As a kid, I’d hear her wish that she could give back to the great people of her home country.
